What is an acoustic band?

The simple answer is that an acoustic band is a band that plays without electric instruments but this doesn't paint the whole picture. Many acoustic bands will base their sound around acoustic guitars but for some the sound that an acoustic band produces might be augmented by keyboards or electric guitar. A good example which will be understood by most people is MTVs Unplugged series which showed major acts playing stripped down versions of their biggest hits. A more recent example is the Radio One sessions performed under the umbrella of the Live Lounge which often features unplugged acoustic band versions of major pop anthems.
